Photography and Work Beyond the Written Page
Creative expression has occupied an important place in Pereira’s life alongside his professional and volunteer responsibilities.
His interest in photography began during high school, when he developed skills in black-and-white photography through self-directed learning. This early introduction encouraged an appreciation for visual storytelling and the ability of photographs to preserve people, places, and moments.
During his college years, he participated in the photography club at Hostos Community College. His biography also identifies membership in the International Freelance Photographers Organization beginning in 1998 and involvement with the Long Island Black Artists’ Association.
His professional development in photography included an association with freelance photographer Jose Gonzales, whom he credits with encouraging his growing involvement in the field.
Pereira subsequently obtained press credentials and undertook freelance photography assignments associated with Today’s Photographer Magazine and Picture Stock Worldwide.
These experiences demonstrate that photography was more than an occasional recreational interest. His involvement included creative practice, professional associations, and opportunities to contribute visual material for publication.
Photography and poetry share an important quality: both invite a person to observe closely and consider how an experience might be communicated to others. A photograph preserves a selected moment through visual composition, while a poem uses rhythm, imagery, and carefully chosen language to explore a thought or feeling.
Pereira’s involvement in both forms suggests a longstanding interest in different methods of personal expression.
His creative background also includes independent cable television production. In 1989, he worked as an independent producer with the Neighborhood Network in New York City, adding another medium to his experience in communication and storytelling.
Outside these pursuits, his personal interests include competitive sports and Latin and jazz music.
Together, photography, television production, music, and poetry reveal a creative life that has developed alongside professional employment and community service. They offer readers a fuller introduction to Pereira as someone whose interests have consistently extended beyond a single occupation.
