Lise Gold has won the Kindle Storyteller Award 2026, receiving the £20,000 prize for Sloane Archer Gets What She Deserves, a slow-burn sapphic romantic comedy. She accepted the award at The London Library on 5 November 2026, during the competition’s tenth-anniversary celebration.

The winner was confirmed in Amazon UK’s official announcement, updated on 5 November, and reported by The Bookseller on 6 November. Gold’s novel was selected from five shortlisted titles following thousands of entries to the annual self-publishing competition.

Kindle Storyteller Award 2026: Lise Gold Wins £20,000

The Kindle Storyteller Award recognises independently published English-language fiction released through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform. The winning author receives £20,000, and the 2026 result marks the award’s tenth year.

Amazon’s shortlist brought together five genres: cosy crime, sapphic romance, children’s science fiction, romance and crime thriller. Alongside Gold’s winning novel, the nominated books were Wilful Cruelty by Rhys Dylan, Burning Secrets by Hannah Ellis, A Summer of Love at Saffron Bay by LK Wilde and Robots at Morning Light by Dr Paul Ian Cross.

The other shortlisted books cover sharply different settings and subjects. Wilful Cruelty follows a criminal investigation; Burning Secrets is a cosy mystery set near Truro; A Summer of Love at Saffron Bay is a Cornish romance; and Robots at Morning Light follows young characters investigating unexplained underwater tremors. Amazon identified each title in its official shortlist announcement.

The judging panel comprised bestselling author Freya North, Jen Barrett, Amazon UK’s KDP Manager, and Pip Landers-Letts, the 2025 award winner. Amazon says judges considered plot, originality, creativity, and the quality and style of writing. Bestseller rankings and reader reviews also informed the selection of the shortlist.

Gold’s victory puts an LGBTQ+ romantic comedy at the centre of this year’s result, alongside nominated titles spanning crime, children’s fiction and other romance stories.

What Is the Winning Novel About?

Sloane Archer Gets What She Deserves follows a socialite whose bad decisions turn a carefully ordered life into a series of unwelcome surprises. Sloane faces ruined manicures, escalating trouble and a run-in with the law that, unexpectedly, becomes a gift.

The novel is a slow-burn sapphic romantic comedy inspired by Gold’s road trips across the United States. Its premise pairs an accident-prone central character with humour and romance, asking what can happen when circumstances refuse to follow the expected plan.

Rather than relying on a conventional love-story setup alone, the book uses Sloane’s mistakes and their consequences to drive the action. The contrast between her privileged world and the trouble she encounters forms the basis of the comedy described in Amazon’s synopsis.

Who Is Lise Gold? From Design to Published Author

Gold left a career in design almost ten years ago to pursue writing. She published her first book in 2017 and has since written more than thirty romance novels under the pen name Madeleine Taylor.

According to Amazon, she initially approached traditional publishers but found limited space for the LGBTQIA+ stories she wanted to tell. She subsequently chose self-publishing, which allowed her to retain creative control and connect directly with readers.

Responding to her win, Gold said self-publishing had given her “incredible opportunities” and thanked her readers and the independent publishing community for encouraging her to continue writing. Her remarks were published in Amazon’s official winner announcement.

The £20,000 award is a new distinction in a career that began with a change of profession and developed through independently released romance fiction.

Who Was Eligible for the 2026 Kindle Storyteller Award?

For the 2026 competition, entrants had to be 18 or older and submit qualifying English-language fiction newly published through KDP between 1 May and 31 August 2026. The award was open to eligible books across genres, not solely romance.

Amazon’s published requirements also called for a paperback edition of at least 24 pages and enrolment in KDP Select while the title remained in the competition. The competition guidance specified availability in both eBook and print formats. These conditions were part of the entry rules, not benefits awarded to the winner.

KDP enables authors to publish directly, while KDP Select is a separate enrolment programme with distribution conditions for participating eBooks. Amazon assesses eligible titles through a process informed by reader response and a final judging panel.

Previous Kindle Storyteller Award winners include Pip Landers-Letts for Pyg, JD Kirk for Stateside and Peter Gibbons for King of War. The prize has therefore recognised books from different genres and stages of independent authors’ careers.

Coverage of literary prizes and publishing developments is also available in the America Publishers Author Spotlight news section.

The 2026 result concludes the award’s tenth-anniversary competition. Amazon has confirmed that entries for the next Kindle Storyteller Award will open in spring 2027.
